Bangabandhu Satellite
A satellite is a machine that orbits around the Earth or another celestial body, used for a variety of purposes such as communication, navigation, scientific research, and Earth observation. Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications and broadcasting satellite launched on May 11, 2018. It is named after the father of the nation of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also known as Bangabandhu. Bangladesh became the 57th nation in the world to own a satellite. The satellite was designed and built by the French company Thales Alenia Space at a cost of $248 million and has a lifespan of about 15 years. It operates in the Ku-band and C-band frequency spectrums and covers the entire Bangladesh territory, including its surrounding waters, as well as Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and some parts of India and Indonesia. Private TV channel operators and Direct-to-Home (DTH) service providers will be the main consumers of the satellite.
